I visited the Foxdale resident 3 weeks
ago, and I interviewed Mr. Karl, one of the residents of the Foxdale. When I
was asking him about what the most impressive historical event in his life, he
answered that it was the world war2. Therefore, I began to search about the
involvement of this war for the students, and I wanted to know how the
students' involvement has changed since those days. As a result, I recognized
that there are a difference and a similarity between now and those days on two
points which are the college scene and the students’ opinion.
First, there were several strange scenes
in the Penn State at that time. Especially, it is impressive for me that there
are a lot of military men and events during the World War2. In the article “La Vie 1944-1945-1946” (1946) describes the scene
which is the back of Old main filled in military students. Furthermore, it also
describes military events such as marching and practicing for military in the
campus. On the other hand, I have seen several military students every day, but
I have never seen a scene which is filled in military students on campus. In
addition, I have also never seen the some military activities on campus.
However, there is a similarity of the
student’s opinion to the war in both ages. In the article “’Keep Out Of War’
Demanded By Collegian In National Poll” (1941) claims that the 59% of students against
to an outbreak of the war. Therefore, young students had a negative opinion to
the war. Interesting enough, this kind of tendency is seen in two thousands.
According to Birch (2002) says in his article, “many Americans begin to build a
movement against the U.S. government’s coming war in Iraq”. In this way, the
young students in both ages have a similar opinion to the war.
In conclusion, there are difference of college
scene between 1940’s and 2000’s about the war. The war events fitted into the
students’ surrounding in 1940’s more than now. However, the students both of ages have
a mind which opposes to the war and aspires to the peace. I think that this
fact is noteworthy and amazing.
