Extensive reading #6

"So the 7-7 wrestler, based in past outcomes, was expected to win just less than half the time. this makes sense; their records in this tournament indicate that the 8-6 wrestler is slightly better. But in actuality, the wrestler on bubble won almost eight out of ten matches against his 8-6 opponent. Wrestlers on the bubble also do astonishingly well against 9-5 opponents.” (Pg.41 Para3)

When I read this part, it made me surprised. I know this sumo's problem which was caused by bout-rigging in 2011, but I have never seen a person who try to analyze clue by using such a statistics. This analysis has persuasive, so I had to convinced the fact again. However, I have been to their training center for sightseeing, and I saw that wrestlers worked hard. Therefore, I want to believe that some wrestlers do clean matches, and I wish the sumo will be improved.

  1. Sumo is quite interesting. And analyzing the statistics to find a clue is quite fascinating :)

  2. I was in Japan, when this event happened. This was very shocking news to all Japanese because sumo is not just a simple sport for them. This is a symbol of their tradition. Of course, there are so many honest sumo wrestlers in Japan. Do know that all four yokozuna in sumo are Mongolian wrestlers.
